Our First Manday

In November of 2014, I reconnected with friends that I hadn’t seen in years. Life has a way of separating people because meaningful relationships require effort. It becomes easy to neglect friendships when the demands of daily life occupy much of your time, so we made a commitment to each other to set aside one day per week to foster our friendship. It was then that we declared Monday our Manday.

On that first night, we spent most of our time reliving memories from the past. We reveled in the tales from our glory days, but I started to notice that we didn’t have any recent memories that were as epic as when we were younger. We needed something unique to do in our time together, and I wanted to create an activity that would encourage us to do anything other than look at our phones or watch TV. That provided the inspiration for our first game.

Going into the first night of playing M@NDAYS (pronounced Mandays - the name is a fusion of Mondays and Mandays), I really didn’t know what to expect. I just hoped my friends would be willing to give it a shot. A few cards in, it became apparent to all of us that we were creating memories that will last a lifetime. We learned things about each other that we never knew and never would have asked, but what really made the game interesting was how much strangers were willing to share with us in the context of a game. We created a non-threatening environment where people felt safe to share deeply personal information in the spirit of fun. That’s when we knew we had something special.

To this day, we still talk about our favorite M@NDAYS memories that came from specific questions in the Starter Pack, which I’ll feature here in our blog. We’d also like to hear your amazing stories. Connect with us here and share your memorable M@NDAYS moments for others to enjoy. We’re on a mission to connect people through play. Welcome to the experiment.
